(Research Inquiries & Requests For Help)

We constantly receive requests -- far too many for us to handle in-house -- from students and professionals alike seeking assistance on a particular research project, paper, report, etc. Accordingly, we offer this page for those postings. The email address of each poster seeking information is included so that Interracial Voice readers -- including other students and professionals who read this website -- can contact them directly with answers to questions or to participate in surveys, questionnaires, etc. (Inquiries from the past twelve months are posted.) As always, all requests to and comments on this section and others are encouraged and welcome.

A word of encouragement for the multiracial community to support quality research into the unique experiences of multiracial people: Until a system can be installed that helps screen solicitations for participants, IV readers should keep their heads up when contacting solicitors and report any problems to us. (For the record, no problems have been reported to date.) Though IV doesn't currently screen research announcements, we may in the future.

From: "Victoria Coleman" vcoleman@alumni.princeton.edu Subject: Request for research participants Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 Dear Interracial Voice readers: I am a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at American University in Washington, DC, and am in the process of recruiting Black/White Biracial participants for my dissertation research. The purpose of my research is to examine the role of identity choice and environmental factors on the development of or protection from anxiety and depression. A few questions that my research will attempt to answer are: if a biracial child grew up in an integrated neighborhood or had an intact family would they be less likely to develop anxiety or depressive symptoms; if a biracial child identifies as solely Black or solely White would they be more or less likely to develop anxiety or depression; and does parent encouragement of exploration of both heritages improve psychological well-being? This research is very important, and I am recruiting nationwide in order to obtain a large sample. The research involves completing a packet of questionnaires (which will take approx. 45 minutes). As incentive for your participation, you will be entered into a lottery drawing that will happen in December 2003 for $100. Thank you for considering participating. If you are interested or know of anyone else who may be, please let me know and I can mail a survey packet out. I can also answer any additional questions you may have. Sincerely, Victoria H. From: "April Jourdan" multiethnicstudy@hotmail.com Subject: research study Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 Please post this email on the Interracial Voice website: Dear multiethnic individual: I invite you to participate in a research study that I am conducting on multiethnic individuals. I am using the term multiethnic to describe individuals with an ethnic background that consists of two or more ethnic/racial groups. Involvement in the study is completely voluntary. It involves approximately 20 minutes of your time to fill out a questionnaire. I am currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Counseling and Human Development at the University of Rochester. I am interested in learning about the experiences of multiethnic individuals. I will be focusing specifically on ethnic identity development. The information that you share with me will be treated as confidential in the sense that your name and identifying information will be removed from any data that I use in my reporting process. I will not share your individually identifiable responses with anyone. The results of this research study may be presented at meetings or in publications; however, your name will be kept private. The benefits of the study are that you will have an opportunity to share your thoughts regarding your ethnic identity. Multiethnic individuals have been overlooked in the research literature, and this study will give you a chance to learn something about yourself while having your voice heard. I think you will find the experience to be an interesting one, and I will share the results of my study with the participants. Your risk as a participant is that the survey questions may trigger unpleasant memories or you may be disturbed by something that you learn about yourself. Referrals for counseling will be provided if needed. If you wish to participate in the study, or if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at multiethnicstudy@hotmail.com. If you have any questions about your rights as a research subject, you may contact the Human Subjects Protection Specialist at the University of Rochester Research Subjects Review Board, Box 315, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14642-8315, Telephone: (585) 506-0005; for long-distance, you may call toll-free, (877) 449-4441. From: "Raquel D Muller" mullerra@shu.edu Subject: Research on Intercultural Couples Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 Dear Members of Multicultural/Multiracial Families: My name is Raquel Muller. I am a doctoral candidate in the Marriage and Family Program at Seton Hall University's Department of Education and Human Services. I am currently working on my dissertation research, which consists of a study of married couples. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship dynamics of three types of marriages: Latino-White, Latino-Latino, and White-White, in order to increase scientific knowledge regarding various types of marital couples, particularly multicultural couples, about which so little has been researched and written (most couple research is based on White-only couples). Relationship dynamics refers to items such as marital satisfaction, childrearing, and conflict-resolution processes. As a partner in an intercultural marriage, I seek to help others understand the way in which intercultural marriages work and the specific challenges and needs they have. Because of this, I am writing to you in hopes that you can help me to recruit participants for my study. My wish is to contact members of your organization so that I can send them the research materials. Participation in the study would entail the completion of a marital inventory, a demographic questionnaire, and an acculturation measure (for Latino participants only). I would be happy to send you one of my flyers, which describes the study's purpose and procedures. If this is o.k. with you, please write back with your mailing address and the name of the person to whom the information should be sent. If you prefer, you may contact my advisor, Dr. Sharon Davis Massey, who is the project supervisor, at masseysh@shu.edu, or (201) 997-6795. I hope to hear from you. Thanks for your kind attention. From: ObiWanNairobi@aol.com Subject: Multi-racial experieces Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing this e-mail to applaud the good work you and the team are doing with this website. I am a mixed raced child living in London England reading a degree in Sociology and Drama. As part of my final drama assesment i am constructing a performance about the experiences of mixed raced children in some of the struggles the may face. Currently i am carrying out interviews with subjects about there experieces hoping to create a performance from the transcripts. Is there any way of senting up an e-mail link so mixed raced teenagers or even adults could send me some experiences. I do not mind if you give my email out to people. I can assure you that all experience recieved will NOT be exploited for theatrical purposes. The purpose of the performance is to create social awarness. Below are some of the things i would like to establish within the performance · What is your 'ethnic background' (parents origins) · How would you define yourself in terms of you 'race', sexuality, class · Do you feel that that you are vied by others different to what you see yourself as? · Discuss terms like, 'Mixed race', 'Mixed Parentage' or 'Half-Caste? · What factors influenced the choice in such labels, if any? · Do you feel positive or negative about your mixed parentage? · Past boyfriends/girlfriends and marriage partners. · Would you see yourself more affiliated with black culture or white culture? · Religious allegiances · What significant events have had an impact upon them for example: Experiencing racism, at school, at work, at home · Have they ever been racist themselves · Ways that they dealt with racism? · If possible try to incorporate some of the parents account · How do they feel the media have represented by the media via films, TV etc. Thank you for you time Gurmit Nothay P.S or gurmitnothay@hotmail.com
From: "Melissa Blackburn" melissa@testimonyfilms.force9.co.uk Subject: TV documentary Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 Dear Sir/Madam I’m writing in the hope that you might be able to help me. We are making a serious history documentary for Channel 4 here in the UK, and I feel it is very important that we include ethnic minority / interracial elders in the film. I thought that some of your older members or contacts might be able to help, which is why I’m writing to you. Our company, Testimony Films, specialises in oral history films using interviews and archive to give a voice to the older generation. We’ve made a number of high profile, award-winning series such as MARRIED LOVE (2002 for Channel 4, which won a Royal Television Society Award), VETERANS: THE LAST SURVIVORS OF THE GREAT WAR (a BBC1 series marking the eightieth anniversary of the end of the First World War using the memories of the last soldiers alive), SOME LIKED IT HOT (2001 for ITV, which documented the history of the British on holiday) and GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND (1999, a major Channel 4 series looking at country life in Britain). At the moment we are making a Channel 4 history film about people who found love outside marriage during the 1940s and 1950s in the UK -- so, people who are aged 70 plus now. We are particularly looking for ethnic minority elders as we feel that they are often left out of histories of Britain, even those concerning the 1950s. I'm sure there are people with important stories to tell out there. For instance, some people arrived in this country in the 50s, and fell in love even though they had a spouse abroad. Back then, people often married very young and quickly in the 1940s, and then needed to escape the loneliness of an unhappy marriage and were drawn into secret affairs. A few lucky ones found the love of their life. But this was an era of different social attitudes when divorce was difficult or impossible, and racial attitudes were archaic, and so many couples suffered much heartache and humiliation before they could be together. Historically, this is an area very little is known about, and we feel its important that their stories are told. Obviously this is a sensitive subject, but I must say that we pride ourselves on our tact and confidentiality when tackling these films – our contributors often find them an extremely rewarding experience. I’d be very grateful if you could help us get the word around, and I’ve enclosed a press release -- perhaps you have an address list to send this to, or you may have a group or person in mind who may be interested. Any help would be very much appreciated. Many thanks, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries at all, or can suggest anyone else I should contact. Very best wishes Melissa Blackburn Assistant Producer Testimony Films 12 Great George Street Bristol BS1 5RS Tel 0117 925 8589 Melissa@testimonyfilms.force9.co.uk
From: "rosamma t john" trinsyperumanoor@hotmail.com Subject: Interracial Voice Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 Hi, I am a student at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently, I am enrolled in a ethnic and race course and I have to do a research paper on this group. I must discuss issues like: How important is country of origin to this group's concerns? What divisions exist within this group? To what degree does this group seek assimilation/integration into mainstream US society or wish to maintain a separate identity? How? To what degree does the group feel victimized by prejudice or discrimination? What programs or services does this organization offer? Etc. Can I find answers to these types of questions off of this site? Or could there be literature about IV somewhere else? Please advise. Thanks. Sarah Thomas

From: "Joy Williams" jwilli9@wpo.it.luc.edu Subject: School project! Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 Hello- My name is Joy Williams and I have a couple things I'd like to comment on and then ask of you. In the past month, I have been doing alot of research for a project I am working on in one of my last courses in college. (undergrad) :) Anyways, subject matter and personal self-discovery issues brought me to browsing your website. After reading and looking at some of the essays, articles, and especially the Bill of Rights you have posted on the page, I have to say I am very impressed! Because I identify myself as a biracial woman, I find it to be a constant struggle to have a concrete identity and place of comfort in society. Anyways, I am a Communication student doing a Qualitative communication study on biracial young adults (particularly those with one African-American and one white parent). By method of interviewing and journal keeping, I hope to understand better how other biracial young adults view themselves culturally, as well as how they communicate in different social settings (where they feel most comfortable or feel they "fit in" best), and their thoughts on dating from a racial standpoint. Maybe some, like myself, feel pretty comfortable about being in all types of cultural situations, whereas others I know do not. I propose that their socioeconomic status, as well as parenting (family background) have alot to do with their confidence and self-concepts. I believe that all of these play major parts in their having all-encompassing racial identities. Regardless of what I find, after my school project is completed, I intend to either write further on the issue or start working on a video documentary. I think it is very interesting that other biracial people such as myself are faced with a society of people who don't feel comfortable around them until they have racially categorized them, or can put them in their little box to be dealt with. It's something our own parents can try as they may to be supportive and give us advice, but even they can't fully understand! I am determined to do more research on the issue and find out what other people and academics have said on this topic. Now for the question: I was wondering if you could possibly give me some good sources of people to contact, or materials I should look into for my project? Any help with this situation would be great, since there has obviously been alot of thought and research done on this subject thus far. Well, thanks for your time...sorry about rambling on about my views. But I'm glad to see that people are calling out to be heard and standing up for their right to not be racially categorized and restricted. Yours Truly, Joy

For the first ever book on the experience of this population, I am interested to hear from people who are Asian-American and Jewish, and from the parents of such people. Respondents may be multiracial, adopted or a convert to Judaism. I would also like to hear from the adoptive Jewish parents of young Asian children, and the biological parents of multiracial Asian-Jewish children. I am interested in the experiences of all types of Jews -- from secular to Orthodox. I hope to gather the experiences through a questionnaire, and if possible, a personal interview. (All names will be kept confidential.) A major publisher has already expressed strong interest in publishing this book. My book will consider the ways in which Asian-American Jews live their lives, religiously, socially, culturally and politically. How do they negotiate their Jewish and Asian-American identities? How are they treated by the Jewish and Asian-American communities and the broader American public? My hope is that my book will not only add to the academic understanding of the Asian-American Jewish community but also have practical significance by assisting leaders of the Jewish and Asian-American communities to better serve this population in the future. From: "Joana Batista" joana.batista@infonie.fr Subject: Interracial Voice Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 hello, I'm from France & I'm doing a reseach about mixed race children in the U.S. I 'd like to understand what exactly makes being a mixed child in the US so hard compared to how it is in european countries. I've been to america many times & I was very surprised at the difficulty for these children to assume their identity, in France it is easy to assume being half white half black for example, they call themselves "métisse". I try to find out how (now that the US census allow multicultural people to tick 2 boxes) can a multiracial child really define him/herself in a country that hasn't "federally" recognized interracial children before 1990. I know slavery is 1 of the reasons, but if we look at Brasil (where slavery was also practised) being a mixed person is not a problem at all, in fact the whole population defines themselves as "mulatos" even white & blond people. If anyone has a comment (any kind) or a personal experience to tell me it would help me a lot for my study. Any names of books would help me too because this issue isn't the most important for historians apparently & it's very hard to find documents or books about it (specially in France). Thank you in advance for your help. JOANA

From: "JORDAN C CATES" manyrone@coastalnet.com Subject: Surname RIVES Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 To Whom It May Concern: I am researching the surname RIVES. I have been told that RIVES is a variant spelling of RIVAS, RIBES, RIBAS, RIBERAS, etc, names used by Conversos. It has been suggested to me recently that this particular branch of my family may be Melungeon, as I am from North Carolina. These RIVES' originated, according to the earliest information that I have, in Surry Co., VA. They lived in Sussex Co., VA, after it was created in 1752. They then moved to Pitt Co., NC in the 1760's. I would appreciate any and all information that you could offer. Regards, Jordan Cates
From: "A.D. Powell" powell@danenet.wicip.org Subject: Research requests Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 Evette Fontenot's "research" is dedicated to perpetuating the myth that there is such a thing as a "light-skinned black." No such creature, honey chile. You seem to be of Creole background. Why don't you ask your fellow Creoles why they don't try to be more like Hispanics? Latinos are just as mixed as you are ("Negro blood" included) but present their ethnicity as encompassing all "racial" groups. Evidence: They have different skin colors, hair texture, etc. You Creoles have that, but "one drop" advocates like you claim that you are all one "race." You degrade yourselves. Dumb!
From: "A.D. Powell" powell@danenet.wicip.org Subject: Research Requests Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 Melissa Holloway should realize that there is no evidence that there ever was a "paper bag test" in private mulatto elite clubs. It seems to be a legend. No one ever presents a witness who says: "I was a member of the club ______, located in the city of ________ at this address______. Our members were_______. Our criteria for membership included __________." Get the picture?

From: Jessica Moser jessica_starlight@yahoo.com Subject: Inter-racial report Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2002 Hello, I am doing a report on inter-racial relationships, and I have to prove my thesis. My thesis statement is: "Inter-racial relationships can cause conflicts outside of the relationship." I have to prove my thesis and show that there are problems because of how people feel towards this subject. I believe that people shouldn't feel badly towards inter-racial dating, but there are problems. If you could give me any things to prove my thesis I'd be very thankful. Thank you so much, Jessica ===== Greed destroys the power of love.

From: Voyageur398a@aol.com Subject: Motivating factors study? Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 Is there source material anywhere on what the various motivating factors are for people who become involved in interracial relationships? Has a formal study ever been done? It seems that everything you find on the subject comes from someone with an agenda -- either proponents (personals listings, chat groups, etc., that treat it as a romantic or sexual fetish), white supremacist and/or hate groups, or an individual couple relating their own experience. I'd like to see something objective that takes into account motivating factors that account for most all interracial relationships (as opposed to problems that show up within them) in America across all socioeconomic lines. Thanks Mike

From: "Dara Orenstein" daraorenstein@hotmail.com Subject: Research Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 Hi, I'm doing research on Perez v. Sharp, the first case to result in the nullification of an anti-miscegenation statute (CA, 1948). Today I came across a reference to "Club Miscegenation" -- a support group of sorts for mixed couples that was popular in Los Angeles at the time. The reference was in article from Ebony, and I found that same paragraph quoted in an e-mail on your web site. Do you know of any other sources on this Club, or of where I might look for more information? Thanks so much, Dara Orenstein
